THE INSTITUTE FOR HEALTH REALITIES

WHO WE ARE

Sam Queen's photo H.L. "Sam" Queen, C.C.N., C.N.S.

Sam is the founder and Director of Research for the Institute.  He got his start in health as a medical technologist, progressing to a medical reporter and secondary researcher.  Although Sam has 50 years experience in studying the realities of health, he is not a doctor, except for an honorary D.Sc. Degree.  At IHR Sam has developed a health model that allows medical professionals to approach complex health issues in a logical and systematic way.  "The only way to understand chemistry", says Sam, "is to approach it as though the body is made by design, and it is designed to win, not lose.  Holding fast to this truism allows a doctor to understand what the body is trying to do.  Once understood, then the doctor's role is more like a health facilitator, developing strategies that  support the body's effort to gain or retain its health.  Otherwise, you spend a lifetime treating symptoms".

In addition to organizing all research and the writing of our Health Realities Journal, Sam gives seminars and consults on individual health problems.  See Sam's biography and curriculum vitae.

Sam’s wife, Betty has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition. She's the author of Put Down The Duckie and the primary editor of all Sam’s writings. Betty also organizes and manages special projects, not the least of which is attempting to organize and manage Sam! Together, she and Sam are totally committed to the Institute’s vision of changing the way the world views health.

Betty’s hobby and second life is as a Sweet Adeline. She’s been singing with the organization for 22 years, and loves it. In addition, she also loves to hike and bicycle with Sam and enjoys their backyard wildlife tableau.

Carol is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Clinical Nutritionist. She graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition. Her dietetic internship was completed at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She has consulted for nursing homes, small hospitals, and private practice physicians. She has worked extensively in the dental field for over 25 years, recognizing the connection between diet and the nutritional status of the dental patient.

She has been involved with the Institute since 2006 and feels very fortunate to be associated with Sam Queen, the best mentor in the world! It's exciting to be learning every day. The most enjoyable part of her work is developing relationships with her clients. She wants to make a difference in their lives!

Carol has been married to her husband, Larry, for 28 years and they share two children – ages 26 and 20. She loves to have fun, and most of all – enjoys being with family and friends!

Cherie Spaulding's photoCherie Spaulding

Cherie has been a constant, friendly face (and voice) at the Institute for Health Realities for seven years! She has been involved in nearly every position here at the office. Therefore, we can't understand why she doesn't have all the answers.

Cherie's life outside the office consists of; going on hikes with her daughter, new grandchild Aurora, and the dogs. Working out in the garden with her husband and co-babysitting Aurora. What keeps her going is the love and hope of her faith. She frequently talks about moving to the Florida Keys!?

Andrea Hass's photoAndrea Hass

Andrea is a part-time employee, keeping some of the administrative things organized and takes care of the bookkeeping aspects of the business. She helps out in many ways around the office, filling in where needed!

Andrea is also a member of the Velvet Hills Chorus of Sweet Adelines here in Colorado Springs (2008 Regional Championship Chorus), and is currently singing with a quartet as their bass (2008 International 17th place and current Regional Champ!), while acting as choreographer for the chorus and financial manager for the Regional Conventions. Just a hint of her versatility! In addition, Andrea's two grown daughters (23 and 24 years old) sing in the chorus with her and are BOTH getting married in 2008! She and her husband enjoy camping and spending time with their families and friends - when they have time! Maybe in 2010?
