OTHER PROJECTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Developed and trademarked a product called Prosta-Ease, for research in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (1982).

The Fall 1984 issue of Heart Talk represented the first official criticism of the interpretation of results of the U.S. Government’s LRC-CPPT study of the value of cholesterol lowering. Within 30 days the message was heard on six radio talk shows and two television networks across the U.S. While Mr. Queen’s argument was overruled then by the NHLBI, it nevertheless remains credible as the topic continues to be raised over the safety of indiscriminate cholesterol lowering.

The substance of the two articles written for Professional Pilot on the subject of jet lag have since made their way into the airline pilot training programs at United Airlines.

The Professional Pilot article, "Burning Issue: Smoking in the Cockpit" was judged best article of the month for that magazine, and was used by the FAA and U.S. Congress in getting smoking banned from U.S. domestic airline flights on February 25, 1990.

The December 1989 issue of Heart Talk, "Cholesterol Hysteria," was instrumental in prompting the USDA and FDA to halt the American Heart Association’s well intended-but ill conceived–Heart Guide Program. The controversy laid the groundwork for the prompt passage of the Nutrition Labeling Act of 1990.

Mr. Queen played (and continues to play) an important role in raising the level of awareness among the lay public and health professionals alike about the various sources of mercury in our environment, and how to recognize and treat chronic mercury toxicity–a newly recognized health problem.

Following his testimony before the Washington State Dental Disciplinary Board on behalf of dentists in that state who wanted to practice without mercury, the Dental Board later ruled it would not be appropriate to restrict the practice of "Mercury-Free Dentistry," April 1992.

Following a January 1993 presentation on the dangers of amalgam at the Institute For Basic Life Principles in Chicago, the Institute issued a mandate that dental amalgam would no longer be made available in its free dental clinic. The Institute now has 2.6 million alumni who wholeheartedly follow its advice.

Testified before the Colorado Board of Dental Examiners on July 17, 1996, to counter pending legislation that would deny the people of Colorado the right to have their amalgam fillings removed for health reasons; and lobbied Governor Ray Romer, Attorney General Gale Norton, and key legislators. Following this, the Board issued a declaration that the people of Colorado had the right to choose to have amalgam fillings replaced so long as it was their idea and not their dentists’. The CBDE opinion issued August 21, 1996.

Began offering certification in Free Radical Therapy in October 1996, so doctors could more easily establish a new standard of care whereby this higher level of health could be offered without concern of being ostracized by dental and medical boards. As of February 2002, 29 health professionals have received certification.

Named by Dr. James Gordon, chairman of the White House Commission on Alternative Medicine, to a 10-member panel of nutrition experts to develop a curricula for reintroducing nutrition into medical school curriculum. October 1999.

HONORS
An honorary Doctor of Science degree (D.Sc.) was awarded for secondary research and factual reporting of the relationship of heart disease to cholesterol and mercury in Athens, Greece by The Open International University for Complementary Medicine (sanctioned by the World Health Organization), April 1989.

In July 1998, Louisiana Academy of General Dentistry attendees awarded the highest evaluation grade they had given any instructor in the four years they had been taking courses towards achievement of a mastership in general dentistry.

In 2004, Consumers for Dental Choice awarded Sam their Humanitarian Award. It stated, "You are the unsung pioneer--uniting science and public policy--in the battle to end the use of mercury in dental fillings."

June 1991 – Participated in seminar on Mercury-Free Dentistry: Protocol, Protection & Promotion, sponsored by the Environmental Dental Association (EDA), on clinical use of intravenous vitamin C and its role in the excretion of mercury and in the healing process, San Diego, CA.

June 1992 – Guested on Herb Shaindlor’s Alaska Live! KENI Newstalk 55, Anchorage, AK, and discussed the potential health risk to some people from following NCEP’s recommendation for lowering serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

June 1992 – Presented 2-hour seminar on cholesterol sponsored by the Alternative Medicine Advocates of Alaska, in which an amendment to the National Cholesterol Education Program was proposed. Anchorage, Alaska.

June 1992 – Testified at a public hearing before the Ad Hoc Advisory Panel on Unconventional Medical Practices, National Institutes of Health, on the scientific merits of intravenous vitamin C, and the potential benefit to human health. Bethesda, MD.

November 1992 – Presented on behalf of Klaire Laboratories a talk on antioxidants: cholesterol as a determinate of dosage and the essentiality of supplementing before cholesterol reduction. DENTAL AND MEDICAL SEMINARS
November 1992 – Connecting Blood Chemistries, Diet and Lifestyle for Improvement of Oral Health: A "Head Start" Preview of the Role of the Dental Physician in the 21st Century. This 10-hour participation seminar satisfied the basic science requirement within the Masters Program of the Academy of General Dentistry, The University of Texas School of Dentistry, San Antonio, TX, who supported the seminar.

April 1994 – A Mouthful of Evidence: How Blood Chemistries and Appropriate Nutritional Response Can Assist In Improvement of Oral Health and Thereby Overall Health. This 6-hour course was provided under the auspices of the education committee of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). Six hours’ credit were allowed toward fellowship and mastership credits in the IAOMT as well as toward fellowship and mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry (basic sciences). Held in Pittsburgh, PA.

May 1995 – A Mouthful of Evidence: This 6-hour seminar was designed to 1) show dentists how, by addressing five (6) fundamental, subclinical conditions common to all degenerative diseases, oral health can be improved and maintained; 2) show dentists how overall health can be improved by addressing subclinical conditions in every patient; and 3) demonstrate how body chemistry analysis can be used to diagnose subclinical conditions, and monitor treatment progress of oral health problems. The San Antonio Component of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry sponsored the seminar. AGD allowed participants 8 hours CE credits in the basic sciences toward a mastership in general dentistry. Held in San Antonio, TX.

October 1995 – Free Radical Therapy and A Mouthful of Evidence: A basic 2-day seminar held for both medical and dental physicians and their assistants. Doctors attended from Germany, France, Canada, and the U.S. Approved for 14 hours CE credits for dentists belonging to the IAOMT or the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). At this seminar, introduced the clinical protocol for assessing bacterial infection risk through comparing the Free Iron Risk Index with glucose intolerance. CONSULTANT FUNCTIONS
Wallace Research Foundation (formerly the Wallace Genetic Foundation) – have volunteered time and resources since 1978 as primary research consultant to H.B. Wallace, Director of the Wallace Research Foundation (WRF) of Scottsdale, AZ. Role is to suggest new research and review and amend research proposals. Through Mr. Wallace, WRF awards an average of $1.2 million in grants per year for the purpose of learning through research the role that diet and lifestyle plays in health and disease.

NIH Peer Reviewer – As a consequence of testimony given before various U.S. Government/quasi-government panels on health matters, Mr. Queen is now included in the NIH Consultant File data bank. He is called upon to assist in reviewing research proposals involving intravenous vitamin C, dental amalgam safety, or potential health effects of cholesterol lowering. In submitting research proposals on these topics, it is important that the primary investigator suggest specifically H.L. "Sam" Queen as a potential reviewer.

Faculty Advisor – Named in January 2001 to the faculty advisory staff of Dr. James Gordon, Chairman of the White House Commission on Alternative Medicine, to advise the medical faculty he has chosen on matters of reintroducing nutrition into the medical school curriculum.
